Definition: Counterpoint is the relationship between two or more melody lines that are played at the same time.


  • Both melodies are dependent on each other to create good-sounding harmonies, but also are independent in rhythm and contour.
  • Both melody lines are called voices, 
  • one song can have counterpoint between two, three, four, or more voices.

  12 Bar Blues One of the most popular types of form in music popularized in Jazz and Blues music chord progression that takes place over 12 bars, or measures. The chord progression is typically made up of 3 chords.  Specifically, the 12 bar blues is based around the I, IV and V chords of any given key.
