Week 4 Voice-leading chords

 Lesson 2

Voice Leading Rules
  • Parallel unisons and octaves are forbidden.
  •  Parallel fifths are forbidden. 
  •  Never double the Leading Tone.
  •  Never double a sharpened or flattened tone in a chord. 
  •  Never double the seventh of a seventh chord, the ninth of a ninth chord, etc.

Dominant Chords


The dominant function chord is any triad that can take the place of the dominant chord to expand the tonic area and in the middle or even at the beginning of the piece like a dominant chord can.

E.g. the dominant 7 chord and seventh chords both start with the leading tone.

Modal Mixture

Modal Mixture The "mixing" or "borrowing" of parallel modes from each other is known as modal mixture. Mixture mostly happens in major keys. When the bIII and bVII chords are "borrowed" from the parallel minor scale. Common mixtures are those that include a flat 6th.
