Secondary Dominants

 A secondary dominant is an altered chord having a dominant or leading tone relationship to a chord in the key other than the tonic. 


How do you find secondary dominants?


Determine the note that would be a perfect 5th below the root of the chord you are analyzing. If this note would be the root of a diatonic chord, the chord you are analyzing is a secondary dominant.

Modal Mixture The "mixing" or "borrowing" of parallel modes from each other is known as modal mixture. Mixture mostly happens in major keys. When the bIII and bVII chords are "borrowed" from the parallel minor scale. Common mixtures are those that include a flat 6th.
